SWAN launches as fourth MNO with unlimited 4G data offer; still lacks voice/roaming

13 Mar 2015

Slovakian broadband operator SWAN has launched 4G LTE mobile data services today as the country’s fourth mobile network operator (MNO). At launch SWAN is offering ‘unlimited’ mobile internet services in around 50 cities under the banner ‘4G Internet v1.0’ without commitment or contract for a monthly fee of EUR5 (USD5.3) including VAT until 31 December 2015, it announced in its press release. Activation requires an additional one-time setup fee of EUR5. Miroslav Strecansky, CEO of SWAN, confirmed that at launch SWAN’s own mobile network covers more than 30% of the population of Slovakia in at least 50 cities, while negotiations with Slovakia’s existing three MNOs on national mobile voice/data roaming continue. With the ‘v1.0’ service lacking nationwide voice/data coverage, SWAN’s chairman Juraj Ondris referred to it as an opportunity for customers to ‘test’ LTE technology with no restrictions on data volume consumption. Maximum mobile data speeds promised on the new LTE network are 50Mbps/10Mbps (download/upload) and the monthly data package can be purchased with or without a device, while the company is currently offering devices including a Huawei 3372 USB modem for EUR65 including VAT. SWAN’s website also includes a list of other network-tested devices that are compatible with the new service.
