PCCW expands OTT strategy with Vuclip acquisition

12 Mar 2015

Hong Kong quadruple-play group PCCW has entered into an agreement to acquire a controlling majority interest in Vuclip, a mobile video-on-demand (VoD) service platform that operates in six countries and claims over seven million mobile-based subscribers per quarter. PCCW explained in a press release that the latest expansion of its digital video business beyond Hong Kong follows PCCW Media’s successful development of its local over-the-top (OTT) services including ‘MOOV’ music and ‘now TV’ news, sports and entertainment apps to augment its existing Hong Kong pay-TV market-leading IPTV services, and forms part of its continued evolution into ‘a top digital entertainment service provider in Asia.’

US-headquartered Vuclip’s premium mobile VoD service footprint includes India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, with rollout plans for other Southeast Asian, African and Middle Eastern markets. The VoD catalogue has more than one million titles including Bollywood and Hollywood movies, TV shows, entertainment/sports news and music videos in 25 languages, with mobile payment options via Vuclip’s partnerships with more than 13 regional carriers.
