NTT DOCOMO sets March 2016 date for NFV rollout

10 Mar 2015

Japan’s leading mobile operator by subscribers NTT DOCOMO used the platform of last week’s Mobile World Congress to announce that it intends to begin commercial deployment of network functions virtualisation (NFV) technology from March 2016. DOCOMO says it is working with equipment vendors Ericsson, Fujitsu and NEC to install NFV in its network in Japan; Ericsson will be responsible for installing the system that controls the virtualised hardware, while Fujitsu and NEC will provide it with virtualised Evolved Packet Core (EPC) software.

Seizo Onoe, executive vice president and CTO at DOCOMO, said: ‘NFV, which has finally moved into its commercial phase, is no longer just a pie-in-the-sky idea … Through multi-vendor initiatives with Ericsson, Fujitsu and NEC and other leading vendors in the NFV domain, we look forward to putting NFV to practical use and thereby helping to accelerate the transition to a new era for mobile networks.’
