Batelco selects Star for GSM/LTE rollout

5 Mar 2015

Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) has signed an agreement with Canada’s Star Solutions to deploy a GSM/Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in St Helena and Ascension Island for the Bahraini firm’s local division, Sure South Atlantic. Trade Arabia quotes Ian Kelly, Sure South Atlantic’s chief executive as saying of the plan: ‘This major project for Sure South Atlantic will see the launch of mobile networks in St Helena and Ascension Island, providing mobile broadband capability and superior voice quality for our customers here.’ Commenting on the decision to select Star Solutions for the rollout, the official added that the vendor ‘has a proven record of achievement in deploying networks [and] offered a bespoke service that addressed Sure’s immediate needs in St Helena and Ascension Island.’ The operator expects to launch the combined GSM/LTE platform later this year.
