NBN Co and Ericsson complete 3.5GHz LTE TDD trial

3 Mar 2015

NBN Co, the company overseeing Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) deployment, has successfully completed a trial of LTE Time Division Duplex (LTE TDD) technology using spectrum in the 3.5GHz band in partnership with Ericsson. In a press release announcing the development, the Swedish vendor noted that the trial had been carried out at two sites using a 20MHz TDD carrier in the 3.5 GHz band, with wireless termination network devices (WNTD) provided by NetComm Wireless, based on chipset solutions provided by Sequans Communications; the live trial was reportedly actually carried out between November and December last year.

With peak cell throughputs, both downlink and uplink, said to have met or exceeded expected performances, and with claims that the results reconfirmed that the TDD access scheme was a ‘promising solution for the 3.5GHz band to provide operators with the capability for advanced services and applications’, Gavin Williams, General Manager Fixed Wireless & Satellite at NBN Co, noted: ‘We see a way forward to expand coverage and capacity to our customers in a cost effective manner using our existing LTE assets complemented with new 3.5GHz radio units.’ Meanwhile, with Ericsson arguing that the trial had further validated the use of 3.5GHz for macro and small cell deployment, Hakan Eriksson, head of Ericsson Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, said: ‘This TDD trial demonstrated that the 3.5GHz spectrum provides a good solution for user performance improvements and capacity expansion to satisfy future consumer needs. Ericsson is happy to provide support to NBN Co in this trial, as Ericsson continues to push for wider TDD industry ecosystem development.’
