Wind confirms participation in AWS-3 and 2500MHz auctions

30 Jan 2015

Wind Mobile, Canada’s fourth-largest cellco by subscribers, has confirmed that it will be participating in both the AWS-3 (1700MHz/2100MHz) and 2500MHz spectrum auctions scheduled for March and April this year respectively, having paid a requisite auction deposit. The telecoms ministry, Industry Canada, has set aside 30MHz of AWS-3 spectrum (60% of the total on offer) for recent entrants, i.e. the second-tier mobile operators including Wind, Videotron, Eastlink and Mobilicity which entered the mobile segment via the 2008 AWS licence sale, and excluding the three nationwide operators Rogers, Telus and Bell. The AWS-3 spectrum is a frequency range adjacent to the existing AWS 1700MHz/2100MHz spectrum used in Canada for both 3G W-CDMA/HSPA and 4G LTE mobile services, while spectrum in the 2500MHz band is intended both for mobile broadband usage on devices such as smartphones and tablets, as well as fixed-wireless broadband internet services in rural areas, according to TeleGeography.
