Digicel says Unwired Fiji 4G now live in Northern Division

30 Jan 2015

Digicel Fiji sister company Unwired Fiji has launched 4G wireless broadband services in the Northern Division of the country, specifically targeting Labasa and Savusavu, as part of its wider FJD70 million (USD34.5 million) expansion plan. Commenting on the launch, Unwired Fiji boss Charlotte Taylor said: ‘The expansion of Unwired 4G highlights our ongoing commitment to eventually provide lightning fast speeds across the entire country, providing internet for the home at the best value’.

Unwired Fiji was the first true wireless broadband internet service in Fiji, rolling out its pre-WiMAX network from 2005 to 2007 – a first in the Pacific. In 2009 WiMAX 4G was launched along the Suva to Nausori corridor and in 2011, TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Unwired’s major shareholder, Papua New Guinea-based Datanets Ltd, was purchased by Digicel Pacific Limited, which opened up new possibilities for the broadband provider. The result was a two-phase reorganisation starting with repayment of debt, while in phase two, Digicel Pacific financed the expansion of Unwired Fiji to the Western Division and further invested in technology to allow the network to continue to compete in the internet market. The end result saw the new-look Unwired Fiji become an internet service provider (ISP) with scale and technology to compete in a competitive market place. In August 2013 Unwired Fiji spent FJD500,000 as part of phase three of its WiMAX network expansion and today, residents and businesses in Suva, Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka and Ba are able to connect to Unwired 4G.
