BT Ireland to bid for rural broadband contract?

26 Jan 2015

BT Ireland is ready to lodge a bid for the contract to roll out broadband services in rural areas of the country, the Irish Examiner reports. TeleGeography notes that the telco currently focuses primarily on providing services and solutions to multi-site corporate businesses, so the move towards home broadband provision would signal a major strategic shift.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, rival telco Eircom has set aside the majority of its remaining EUR500 million (USD560.2 million) budget in anticipation of being awarded the rural contracts, while the state is expected to contribute an as-yet unspecified amount towards the project. The government aims to offer speeds of at least 30Mbps to every rural home by 2020.
