Thailand’s second largest mobile operator DTAC expanded its commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services to the holiday island of Phuket on 15 January, representing its first location outside of the Bangkok region to receive 4G coverage. All three districts of Phuket have gained LTE coverage from DTAC in a footprint including tourist attractions, seaside areas, business zones and residential areas, the Phuket Gazette reports. The resort had approximately 13 million Thai and international tourist visitors in 2014, up 8.7% year-on-year, while internet usage in Phuket grew by 150% from the previous year. DTAC also announced it will continue 4G network expansion to Had Yai, Surat Thani, Koh Samui and other regions, under a plan to install more than 6,500 3G/4G base stations to cover all areas in Bangkok and its vicinity as well as in 30 other provinces nationwide.
