Bangladesh blocks OTT messaging apps for short period

19 Jan 2015

The government of Bangladesh has blocked popular over-the-top (OTT) internet instant messaging/voice services Viber and Tango for a limited period over security concerns, the country’s Daily Star newspaper reports. The Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission (BTRC) sent a directive to all telecoms network operators to temporarily restrict access to Viber and Tango, citing security reasons following days of political violence during countrywide blockades enforced by a 20-party opposition alliance.
