Ugandan Long Term Evolution (LTE) network operator Smile Communications has announced that it plans to offer voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology by mid-2015, enabling users to utilise their 4G devices for voice calls as well as data services. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, the telco launched data-only 800MHz LTE services in Kampala in June 2013, having upgraded its networks from WiMAX technology. Besides Uganda, Smile Communications has operations in Tanzania, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
