Fixed line incumbent and cellular monopolist Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) began trialling IPTV services in late December, ahead of an official launch scheduled to take place in March. The trial saw BTC offer a service with 150 channels to customers in 100 homes on the Bimini islands. NexTV Latam quotes BTC CEO Leon Williams as saying that the operator will initially concentrate on reaching as-yet unserved markets before launching the service on the larger islands: ‘BTC will be the first company to provide TV services to many sparsely populated islands in Bahamas. We will not launch in New Providence until we reach the Family Islands’ residents.’ BTC’s IPTV offering will include a video-on-demand (VOD) library and DVR functions as well as BTC’s own channel.
