Movilnet, Movistar reveal LTE deployment schedules

9 Dec 2014

The respective presidents of Venezuelan cellcos Movilnet and Movistar, which recently won 4G-suitable spectrum licences alongside pay-TV operator and wireless newcomer DirecTV, have revealed their plans for LTE network rollout over the coming year. Manuel Fernandez announced to local media that Movilnet, a unit of state-owned telco CANTV, is targeting deployment of 664 LTE base stations nationwide within a year, while Pedro Cortez Rojas disclosed that Telefonica subsidiary Movistar is also beginning its LTE network installation in Q1 2015. Both operators won AWS (2100MHz/1700MHz) and 2600MHz licences, stipulating coverage of Venezuela’s 20 most populous municipalities in the first year, and a footprint encompassing at least 70% of the population by end-2018. Domestically-owned rival Digitel is currently the sole commercial LTE operator in the country.
