Cameroon’s Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Jean-Pierre Biyiti Bi-Essam, has revealed that Viettel Cameroon, which operates under the brand Nexttel, has already signed up around 400,000 customers since its launch on 18 September, writes Business in Cameroon. The minister made the announcement before the Finance and Budget Commission earlier this month, while outlining plans for his proposed XAF13.673 billion (USD25.5 million) budget for 2015. Nexttel, which is majority-owned by Vietnamese telecoms firm Viettel Group, is set to lose its two-year monopoly on the provision of UMTS services on 14 December. The firm was awarded its mobile licence in December 2012, but a number of setbacks meant that the cellco did not launch commercial 2G and 3G services until September 2014, TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database states.
