Telikom PNG announces Highlands transmitter upgrade

5 Dec 2014

Telecoms customers in the Highlands region of Papua New Guinea will reportedly soon benefit from improved voice, internet and data services after national fixed line incumbent Telikom PNG commissioned a new link between Madang and Mount Hagen. According to local press source The National, the high capacity network (HCN) link forms part of a major project being undertaken by Telikom PNG under which it aims to overhaul its national transmission network, with the new connection expected to replace a 20-year-old legacy radio link connecting the Highlands provinces into Lae and Madang.

National Broadband Network programme manager Jeffrey Bean was cited as saying that the first phase of the HCN project was now in the final testing phase, and is expected to be switched on later this week, with Telikom engineers, along with project contractors, having completed the physical installation of all seven sites. According to Bean, each link is now being tested to ensure it meets Telikom’s design and network key performance indicators before being switched on for customers, saying: ‘The testing phase is crucial as it determines the quality of the network and hence the quality of the links extended to our customers … Preliminary tests on the links have been favourable and we can expect the network to be live later this week.’

Meanwhile, phase two of the project, which will link Port Moresby and Lae, is said to be progressing well, with installations complete for ‘some’ of the sites.
