NCC shuts down Owntel for lack of licence

24 Nov 2014

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it has shut down the ‘illegal’ operations of Owntel Communications, stating that the company does not hold the required operating licences. This Day writes that Owntel had been selling and installing fixed and mobile telecoms terminals, as well as providing vehicle tracking services, without a concession from the regulator. ‘Owntel is providing telecommunication services, especially vehicle tracking services, which involve network and data services that require a licence, yet it is operating without [one],’ head of enforcement at the NCC, Salisu Abdul, told journalists.
