Vodafone launches LTE-A in Melbourne

21 Nov 2014

Vodafone Australia has announced the commercial launch of its LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network in Melbourne, with 678 new ‘4G+’ sites switched on in Victoria initially, and a further 71 to be activated over the next six weeks. With the operator utilising frequencies in both the 850MHz and 1800MHz bands to deploy the technology, its chief technical officer Benoit Hanssen said of the development: ‘Customers will immediately notice the difference right across the city following the mass switch on of new 4G+ coverage today … The type of spectrum we’ve used for our new network means customers’ devices will work better indoors, including homes, businesses, shopping malls and car parks.’

With Vodafone Australia also revealing that ‘almost two million devices’ are now connected to its 4G network across the country, the network development falls in line with plans announced by the cellco in July 2014 to extend 4G coverage to 95% of Australia’s metropolitan population by end-2014. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, at that date the mobile operator outlined plans to ‘significantly boost’ 4G coverage for more than 1.5 million customers using its 850MHz spectrum.
