Freedom Pops to the Netherlands

20 Nov 2014

Los Angeles-based mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) FreedomPop has signed an agreement to launch its services in the Netherlands, according to Telecompaper, citing the company’s European representative Nicholas Constantinopoulus. Whilst the name of the Dutch network operator hosting the MVNO is yet to be revealed, the US firm previously announced plans to launch operations in Belgium using the network of KPN’s Belgian subsidiary BASE in July 2014, suggesting the MVNO would use KPN’s Dutch network for operations in the Netherlands. Constantinopoulus claims more details will be announced over the next few days. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, FreedomPop was founded in 2011 by Stephen Stokols, BT Group’s former Vice President of Strategy and Business Development. Early FreedomPop backers included Mangrove Capital, Doll Capital Management and Atomico, while recent US press reports have suggested that the MVNO is in the midst of takeover talks with mobile giant Sprint Corp.
