Managing director of Irish cableco UPC Ireland, Magnus Ternsjo, is to become ‘part of the Virgin Media Executive Committee’ according to reports citing an internal staff email sent yesterday to employees of UPC’s parent company Liberty Global, the UK-headquartered group which also includes Virgin Media. From 1 December, UPC’s Irish arm will ‘establish closer lines of engagement with Virgin Media colleagues…benefitting from economies of scale and [exploring] further regional cooperation’. While the Irish provider has stated that business will continue ‘as usual’, the move follows Liberty Global’s acquisition of UK-based quadruple-play operator Virgin Media in 2013 and has raised the possibility of UPC Ireland being folded into Virgin operations.
