Africell says it plans to invest USD150 million in its newly acquired Orange Uganda unit over the next three years to upgrade and expand its network infrastructure. Orange currently claims only around 3.3% of Uganda’s cellular market in terms of subscribers, as it struggles to compete with the three main players, MTN, Airtel and Uganda Telecom Ltd (UTL), but Africell says the injection of USD150 million funding will help turn the company around. The new owner is hoping to achieve a 20% market share over the next four to five years, the Wall Street Journal reports chief executive Ziad Dalloul as saying, as it grows its subscriber base from 700,000 to six million.
