AT&T upgrades 15 LTE cell sites in USVI

14 Nov 2014

A&T has upgraded a total of 15 cell sites on Saint Croix and Saint Thomas in the US Virgin Islands (USVI), as part of its ongoing Project Velocity IP (VIP) investment programme. On Saint Croix, two cell sites have been overhauled with Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in the areas east of Christiansted, while another seven existing 4G cell sites have been upgraded with additional capacity. The remaining six capacity improvements took place on Saint Thomas, chiefly covering tourist areas such as downtown Charlotte Amalie, the airport area in Nana Hill and the Yacht Haven Grande marina in Estate Ross.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, AT&T launched 4G LTE on Saint Thomas and Saint Croix in June 2013, beating chief rival Sprint to the punch. Sprint went on to initiate its own 4G services in December that year.
