Telkom SA trials 150Mbps LTE-A in Parkview, Parkhurst

13 Nov 2014

South African cellco Telkom is trialling Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) technology, capable of delivering download speeds of up to 150Mbps, in the upscale Johannesburg suburbs of Parkview and Parkhurst. BusinessTech reports that residents of the two neighbourhoods can trial the high speed service free of charge for 14 days, with potential customers provided with a 4G router and 20GB of data. Following the trial, users can sign up to a LTE-A plan for ZAR1,399 (USD125) per month, which includes a 100GB data allowance. Going forward, it is understood that additional LTE-A packages will be unveiled in December.

As previously noted by CommsUpdate, in September 2014 Telkom revealed plans to deploy LTE-A to a total of 50 suburbs in Greater Johannesburg, Western Cape, Tshwane and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) by March 2015. The advanced network will run on the 2300MHz band.
