TSTT reaches island retreats on mission towards 95% 4G coverage

12 Nov 2014

Telecommunications Services of Trinidad & Tobago (TSTT) has established LTE-based wireless broadband coverage under the Blink Broadband banner on Chacachacare Island as part of its mobile and fixed-wireless broadband expansion programme to reach 95% of Trinidad and Tobago with high speed wireless services, reports local newspaper Newsday. Chacachacare Island is part of the Bocas Islands (locally referred to as ‘Down-the-Islands’) that lie between Trinidad and Venezuela (in the Bocas del Dragon – Dragon’s Mouth), also including isles such as Monos, Huevos, Gaspar Grande and Centipede Islands where thousands of Trinbagonians spend vacations or day trips.

The newly deployed Blink Broadband LTE network section on Chacachacare is notable for being powered by a standalone solar-power photovoltaic system, which also ‘provides full voice and internet coverage to the seaside areas along the north coast of Trinidad’. The largest solar-powered system in the country now provides a reliable and uninterrupted power supply to the mobile and wireless broadband network in the area, covering islands and passengers on ferries and other sea vessels.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that in April 2014 TSTT launched its first pilot LTE fixed-wireless broadband services under the ‘Blink Wireless Broadband’ banner, while the operator is expected to be granted 700MHz band mobile frequencies to expand LTE services nationwide under its ‘bmobile’ cellular brand, with results of a 4G licence tender currently pending.
