Pakistani fixed line incumbent Pakistan Telecommunications Company Ltd (PTCL) has upgraded all customers on its 4Mbps plan to an 8Mbps connection at no extra cost until 31 January 2015. From 1 February 2015 customers will be charged PKR2,500 (USD24.33) per month for the boosted plan, increasing to PKR2,999 – PTCL’s current price for a capped 8Mbps plan – from 1 July 2015. Customers wishing to keep their original plan and avoid the extra fees must contact PTCL to downgrade their subscription. PTCL’s opt-out policy has, however, drawn criticism from local industry commentators, as it railroads users into upgrading without consent.
