Vodafone Romania, the country’s second-largest cellco, has claimed a first in the local market by launching voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services, carrying IP voice calls between smartphone users purely over its 4G network with no need to switch to 3G/2G networks. The VoLTE solution was provided by China’s Huawei Technologies, the operator’s technical director Giovanni Chiarelli disclosed. Vodafone Romania is also introducing ‘Vodafone Call+’, a service based on VoLTE technology enabling the caller to include additional information on the call recipient’s phone screen such as a picture and subject of the call, whilst allowing multimedia content to be shared between the two phones during the call, as well as seamless switching back and forth between voice call and video call modes.
