Aeronet launching TD-LTE in 1H15

5 Nov 2014

Locally-owned Puerto Rican fixed-wireless and fibre broadband provider Aeronet is working towards launching a commercial TD-LTE network in the first or second quarter of 2015, its president Gino Villarini told TeleGeography this week. Aeronet acquired a 2.5GHz spectrum allocation in October 2012 under a 30-year lease transfer, before announcing plans to build a 4G broadband network. Having pushed back the TD-LTE launch window from an earlier forecast of August 2014, Villarini explained that the delay was due to a project to optimise the TD-LTE rollout via spectrum swapping with another Puerto Rican 2.5GHz spectrum holder. Aeronet expects to launch the 4G fixed-wireless internet service in H1 2015 across an initial 50 base stations in the capital San Juan, second-largest city Ponce and a third city, Mayaguez. Within twelve months from the initial launch the operator intends to launch a second-phase expansion of the TD-LTE network. Furthermore Aeronet expects the new wireless broadband service to allow it to widen its existing range of customers, potentially to include an increased number of smaller/individual clients such as small office/home office (SOHO) customers.

Aeronet, founded by Mr Villarini in 2001, specialises in providing internet/data services to large, medium and small business customers and wholesale IP transit services to ISPs in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands; its range includes secure 100Mbps fibre connections and Metro Ethernet, and it operates its own fibre network covering the capital San Juan plus a 120-site wireless broadband network across Puerto Rico based on technology including Motorola Canopy.
