EC green-lights Vodafone-ESB 1Gbps broadband venture

28 Oct 2014

The European Commission (EC) has given its approval for the fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) investment agreement signed in July 2014 between telecoms company Vodafone Group and Irish electricity supplier ESB, to go ahead. Network rollout will start next year beginning in Cavan town, with phase one due for completion at end-2018. ESB power lines will carry fibre-optic cable straight to the targeted 500,000 homes and businesses across 50 towns and suburbs, enabling Vodafone Ireland to offer speeds of up to 1Gbps to its customers.

The EC stamp of approval for the EUR450 million (USD571.2 million) Vodafone-ESB venture has been immediately followed by an Eircom announcement that it too will be rolling out 1Gbps speeds via fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology throughout Ireland.
