Part of Robi’s infrastructure ownership transfer approved

9 Oct 2014

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has approved cellco Robi Axiata’s transfer of 49% ownership of a passive network infrastructure subsidiary to Edotco Group, a company within the operator’s Malaysian parent Axiata Group. The value of the transferred shares is BDT5.4 billion (USD68.7 million), the Daily Star reports. The money is earmarked for upgrading of network infrastructure and other equipment. Earlier this year the BTRC had postponed Robi’s proposal for transferring 80% of the infrastructure shares to Edotco, as there was ‘no relevant guideline.’ Robi should be allowed to transfer the shares ‘when the guideline is formed’, a BTRC official said.
