Belgrade mobile network gets VIP treatment

23 Sep 2014

Mobilkom Serbia, which operates under the VIP Mobile brand name, has announced that it has upgraded its network in Belgrade to provide better indoor and outdoor signal coverage and to improve the quality of calls, and expects to complete similar modernisation work elsewhere by the end of October. The Austrian-backed cellco is spending EUR23 million (USD29.55 million) to update its infrastructure, with a view to preparing its network for a future upgrade to 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE). Under the programme, VIP has overhauled its mobile platform at 340 locations in the capital and plans to modernise its network at 550 locations in 21 cities and install more than 320 new base stations along major roads and in smaller towns. VIP’s director Dejan Kastelic commented on the upgrade programme: ‘VIP network equipment is ready to support 4th generation (LTE) technology and fulfils the highest international and domestic technological and ecological standards. The modernised VIP network is a basis for introducing new, innovative services for our customer[s] and provides them with [a] premium mobile experience.’
