Pakistan’s mobile providers have been able to maintain services in areas of Punjab and Azad Kashmir affected by the recent flooding, with only a handful of incidences of network failure, ProPakistani writes. The cellcos noted that they faced difficulties in keeping cell sites live, as floods knocked out the power for an average of 36-48 hours. Back-up energy solutions – installed by most operators to cope with Pakistan’s unreliable power grid – and redundancies enabled the providers to keep services running. As the only means of communication available within the affected areas, the government and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued safety warnings via SMS. As noted by CommsUpdate yesterday, network operators in neighbouring India have ramped up efforts to restore services in the region after the monsoon floods damaged essential infrastructure.
