Ericsson and Polkomtel trial LTE Broadcast technology

2 Sep 2014

The Polish mobile operator Polkomtel, which offers services under the Plus brand, has completed a live trial of Long Term Evolution (LTE) Broadcast technology in conjunction with Ericsson. The two companies carried out the test at a World Volleyball Championship match between Poland and Serbia at Warsaw’s National Stadium on 30 August. 300 guests and journalists were given LTE Broadcast-enabled mobile devices which allowed them to watch multi-angle feeds, instant replays and close-ups. The Swedish vendor says its LTE Broadcast solution efficiently utilises LTE spectrum and network resources, enabling new revenue models for premium content. Polkomtel currently covers around two-thirds of the Polish population with its 4G network, but has not revealed a time-scale for the introduction of LTE Broadcast services.
