State-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has sought intervention from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to compel Idea Cellular to sign fresh interconnection agreements in the circles where the latter has received new licences. The Economic Times writes that BSNL is looking to sign new agreements for seven operating areas – Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, Kolkata, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, North East and Orissa – to ensure uninterrupted service in these areas. Idea had its licences for the listed areas quashed under the Supreme Court’s February 2012 ruling, and the cellco went on to win new concessions for the circles in subsequent spectrum auctions. The DoT issued the new licences in October last year and since then Idea has not responded to BSNL’s requests to ink new interconnect agreements.
