freenet contract customers rise 1.5% to 5.9m

freenet has reported consolidated group revenue of EUR727.2 million (USD974.3 million) for the second quarter of 2014, a decrease of 10.2% from EUR809.6 million in the year-ago period, mainly due to lower activity from the low-margin hardware sales business. The mobile communications division accounted for EUR714.5 million of total sales, compared to EUR801.6 million in 2Q13. Group EBITDA totalled EUR87.6 million for the three months ended 30 June 2014, up 2.9% from EUR85.2 million, while group net income rose by 3.1% year-on-year to EUR57.1 million. freenet’s mobile customer base totalled 12.99 million at mid-2014 (down from 13.56 million twelve months earlier), of which 4.14 million were pre-paid customers, compared to 5.00 million at 30 June 2013, mainly due to the ongoing disconnection of inactive SIM cards by network operators. Around 5.90 million were contract users (up 1.5% from 5.81 million) and the remaining 2.94 million were ‘no-frills’ customers (primarily comprised of mobile contracts completed online in the discount market), up by around 190,000 from twelve months earlier.
