Vietnamese-backed mobile startup Viettel Peru is set to launch later this month under the ‘Bitel’ brand name. According to El Comercio, the operator’s stores and customer centres in Villa Maria del Triunfo, Surco and Villa El Salvador are ready to open their doors to customers, with sales of devices reportedly set to begin on 30 July. The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has set a deadline of 26 July for Viettel’s launch but the provider has remained tight-lipped regarding an exact date for beginning services.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Viettel won Peru’s fourth mobile licence in January 2011, including 25MHz of spectrum in the 1900MHz band before going to win additional 900MHz frequencies in August 2012. Having announced plans to launch services by January 2013 the telco has faced continuous delays and in August that year the MTC stepped in to assist with the rollout, revealing that it would be working closely with the provider to ensure that it met its deadline for launch.
