Mobilink, Pakistan’s largest cellco by subscribers, has announced that it will launch commercial 3G services on 18 July, ProPakistani writes. The cellco, which is controlled by Russian-owned group Vimpelcom, has delayed the commercial launch of its 3G service allowing rivals Pakistan Telecommunications Mobile Ltd (PTML/Ufone), China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak/Zong) and Telenor Pakistan a head start in the nascent mobile data space. Mobilink began offering 3G services on a free trial basis shortly after receiving its licences in late May 2014, and has extended the service to eleven cities – Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, Quetta, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Hyderabad – whilst its competitors have launched fully-fledged 3G offerings. As previously noted by CommsUpdate, Mobilink pushed back its 3G launch in late June this year, claiming that it was extending its trial as a reward for customers. At the time, however, unconfirmed reports suggested that the provider had been held back from activating its network due to concerns that it was not meeting quality of service (QoS) standards.
