Bulgarian telecoms operator MobilTel (M-Tel), a subsidiary of Telekom Austria Group and US-based technology company Affirmed Networks, has announced the successful trial of network functions virtualisation (NFV) technology using the Affirmed Mobile Content Cloud solution. According to a joint press release, Affirmed Networks will provide the Bulgarian telco with a fully virtualised Evolved Packet Core (vEPC), including 4G gateways, policy control and enforcement functions, Gi services, dynamic scaling, MPLS-based VPN, and other capabilities. Further, Horst Pertal, general director of the Technology department at M-Tel, said that the successful test of NFV technology is part of the company’s continuing investment in technology development, IT infrastructure and products; the executive revealed that the company plans to invest BGN200 million (USD139.3 million) in 2014, while combined investment for the period 2005-2013 amounts to more than BGN1.5 billion.

Gunther Ottendorfer, Chief Technical Officer of Telekom Austria Group said; ‘We are absolutely confident that the NFV technology is a defining trend in the mobile industry. We are therefore very pleased with M-Tel’s initiative to explore and implement NFV. The success and efficiency goes along with years of innovation strategy at M-Tel. For Telekom Austria Group, this is just the beginning of a journey to explore the latest technologies and further improve services for our customers, performance, experience, or availability.’
