The government of Nepal has revealed that it is pushing ahead with its plan to offload a 30% stake in state-owned fixed line and mobile operator Nepal Telecom (NT) to a strategic investor. Rumours emerged last October that Kathmandu was looking to improve NT’s service offerings through a partnership with an overseas telco, and this has now been confirmed by Minister for Information and Communications Dr Minendra Rijal, The Himalayan reports. He told a meeting of the Legislature-Parliament Development Committee: ‘We are preparing to call proposals for strategic partnership … to make Nepal Telecom services competitive.’ He added: ‘The government has given top priority to improving the quality and effectiveness of Nepal Telecom services, as communication services in the country cannot be imagined without Nepal Telecom.’
