Movistar targets Guatemala City LTE launch in 3Q14

13 Jun 2014

Movistar Guatemala intends to introduce 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services during the third quarter of 2014, TeleSemana reports. The network will cover 50% of capital Guatemala City at launch, and will be extended to major municipal centres and tourist resorts later in the year. It remains unclear as to whether or not Movistar has been granted additional spectrum with which to launch LTE; it is believed that testing has taken place using refarmed 1900MHz frequencies.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Telefonica’s Costa Rican subsidiary also has tentative plans to stage an LTE launch in 2014. Elsewhere in the Central America, Telefonica boasts operations in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Panama, but lacks a presence in Honduras and Belize.
