The Tunisian government has decided that state-backed telco Tunisie Telecom (TT) should retain its 51% stake in the Mauritanian mobile operator Mattel. In October 2013 it was confirmed that TT had hired BNP Paribas to oversee the hunt for a buyer for its majority holding in Mattel, but the telco revealed in January this year that it had called off the search after failing to attract sufficient interest. Agence Ecofin reports that this strategy has now been backed up by the Tunisian government, which has a 65% stake in TT. Mattel lies in third place in Mauritania’s mobile sector, with 18% of all subscribers at the end of March 2014 according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database.
