Claro must pay USD123m overdue tax bill

9 Jun 2014

Conecel (Claro Ecuador), a subsidiary of Mexico’s America Movil, has been forced to hand over USD123 million in unpaid taxes, according to Ximena Amoroso, director of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) who was speaking to Ecuadorian newspaper El Telegraph. As reported by Telesemana, Ecuador’s National Court of Justice (CNJ) ruled in favour of the government’s claim for outstanding income tax, while the CNJ resolution also includes USD29 million for profit share payments to workers. Claro, Ecuador’s largest cellco by subscribers, last year succeeded in cancelling USD113.5 million in tax debts out of a total USD250 million claimed by the state.
