Verizon follows AT&T with VoLTE announcement

22 May 2014

The US mobile market leader Verizon Wireless says it plans to introduce Voice-over-Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) technology on its 4G network later this year. The firm said that selected 4G handsets can be upgraded to VoLTE capability via a software update. Rival firm AT&T has announced that it will launch its own VoLTE services tomorrow (23 May), with switch-ons coming in selected areas of Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin. At launch, the high definition (HD) VoLTE service will be only enabled on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, but AT&T has suggested that more VoLTE-enabled devices are likely to follow in due course.
