O3b, Timor Telecom announce multi-year partnership

21 May 2014

O3b Networks has announced an agreement to supply high throughput, low latency capacity to Timor-Leste’s incumbent telecoms operator Timor Telecom (TT). The deal will enable TT to significantly increase its broadband coverage and improve the speed and quality of its services for corporate and private clients. Following this change, TT has redesigned its internet service offer for both new and current clients, and will be presenting its new mobile subscriber and broadband internet campaigns later this month. ‘As leaders in a competitive market, we are delighted to be amongst the first operators in the world to use the O3b network and to bring more innovative services to Timor-Leste,’ commented TT’s CTO Gerardo Carrilho Angelo, adding: ‘O3b will give us major improvements in throughput and performance. This represents a great step forward for connectivity in Timor-Leste.’ TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Portugal Telecom subsidiary TT won a tender to reconstruct the island’s telecoms infrastructure in July 2002 and went on to launch commercial services on 1 March 2003. Its exclusivity was brought to an end with the award of telecoms licences to Vietnamese-owned Viettel and Telin, a subsidiary of Telekom Indonesia, in July 2012.
