Nextel Brasil targets 4G launch in Rio de Janeiro ahead of World Cup

1 May 2014

Brazilian wireless services provider Nextel Brasil, a subsidiary of US-based NII Holdings, is reportedly targeting the launch of 4G mobile services in Rio de Janeiro in time for the upcoming football FIFA World Cup, according to Teletime quoting its chief technical officer Nestor Bergero as saying. The CTO says that Nextel intends to deploy services in the 1800MHz band, bucking the trend of other Brazilian carriers which have so far been using the 2500MHz band.

Addressing delegates at the LTE Latin America conference, Mr Bergaro said that the operator’s plan to offer 4G in Sao Paulo is dependent on it securing more spectrum. He added that Huawei Technologies of China is supplying its 4G network gear – having also supplied its 3G equipment. Nextel Brasil launched its 3G service in Rio and Sao Paulo in September 2013, and to date has signed up 850,000 subscribers.
