China Mobile and domestic vendor Huawei have verified a number of key technologies for Time Division Long Term Evolution Advanced (TD-LTE-A) in field tests conducted at Chengdu Electronic Technology University. The duo, both members of TD-LTE advocacy group Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI), tested TD-LTE and Frequency Division (FD)-LTE Carrier Aggregation (CA) with TD-LTE as the primary cell and FD-LTE as the secondary and achieved a theoretical peak transfer rate of 250Mbps. Also tested was Multi-Stream Aggregation (MSA) between TD-LTE and FD-LTE sites, with the results showing flexible handover or traffic concurrency for users, based on network coverage, load and interference. The pair also trialled multi-user multiple-input multiple output (MU-MIMO) with four data streams on an eight-antenna networks, resulting in an 100% improvement in peak data rates, whilst indoor and outdoor tests of TD-LTE with 256 QAM (quadrature amplified modulation) enabled a 33% gain in peak data rates compared to 64QAM, and an average improvement in cell performance of more than 20% in an indoor environment. In its press release, Huawei noted that the tests form part of the standardisation process for the TD-LTE-A upgrades and will help accelerate the development and commercialisation of the technologies.
