Econet targeting Beitbridge for 4G LTE rollout

17 Apr 2014

Econet Wireless, Zimbabwe’s largest cellco in terms of subscribers, has reportedly revealed plans to deploy its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Beitbridge, a border town in the province of Matabeleland, domestic newspaper the Zimbabwe Mail reports. Econet Group’s CEO Douglas Mboweni said: ‘4G LTE coverage [is available] in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, and we are now targeting the largest entry to Africa which is Beitbridge.’

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Econet Wireless launched the first commercial 4G LTE network in the country in Victoria Falls and Livingstone in August 2013, ahead of the United Nations (UN) World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly. The 4G network provides theoretical download speeds of up to 65Mbps.
