Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has launched what it claims to be the country’s first fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband service, covering ‘major markets’, and aimed at offering 100Mbps access to ‘residential, business, public sector, carriers and internet service providers (ISPs)’, ‘including multi-storey buildings’. A press release added that SLT’s FTTH-based broadband speeds and HD TV channels on its ‘Peo TV’ IPTV platform were demonstrated to the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), including a recorded data speed of ‘almost 100Mbps’. Package options will include ‘up to 100Mbps (download)’ and a 50Mbps option, while existing Peo TV packages with HD channels will also be available for FTTH users.

Lalith De Silva, CEO of SLT said: ‘SLT’s ultrafast bre-based broadband proposition plans are in the pipeline to provide services with the unmatched scope of consistent uninterrupted download speeds and upload speeds, and high definition television to Sri Lankans. SLT continues to roll out VDSL2, ADSL2+, fixed 4G/LTE and FTTH services to enhance customers’ experience while ensuring that investments are future focussed … At present, nearly half a million households are connected to SLT Broadband services and we are seeking to connect them in the future through the world’s most reliable connectivity option, FTTH/ fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) to upgrade and enhance user experience and also to empower them with endless possibilities and unlimited opportunities.

Through an FTTH connection, users will also be able to access services such as video on demand (VoD), Wi-Fi, VoIP, live feeds, online education, online gaming, teleworking, videoconferencing, e-services, etc, while SLT said the new platform enables substantial productivity gains for SMEs and micro-level businesses across the country, giving them access to cloud computing, e-application benefits, etc.
