Zain Bahrain announced on 31 March 2014 that HD (High Definition) voice technology has been rolled out across its newly upgraded mobile network, and that all its customers will automatically get HD voice calling without registration or subscription. The announcement follows closely the HD voice launch of rival Viva Bahrain which claimed a first in the Kingdom. Zain’s HD voice feature is the first commercial fruit borne by its new generation network overhaul, and will be followed soon by national 4G LTE mobile broadband access for smartphones and tablets. TeleGeography notes that Zain Bahrain’s existing commercial 4G LTE services are restricted to home/office 4G modems. The cellco has invested USD100 million in the deployment of the new network, which boosts mobile data speeds and gives wider and stronger coverage. Regarding the HD voice launch, a spokesperson said: ‘Our customers can now enjoy amazing clarity on voice calls, even in noisy and crowded environments, such as shopping malls. The technology is ground-breaking – it has the ability to reduce background noise and offer remarkable audio clarity.’
