900MHz, 1800MHz spectrum switchover taking place this week

3 Apr 2014

A spectrum switchover is on the cards for Romania’s mobile operators, with the previously-stated 6 April 2014 handover deadline imminent. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in September 2012 the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) secured EUR682.14 million (USD882.29 million) in its multi-band spectrum auction, with the five participating bidders securing 85% of the spectrum on offer.

However, the regulator was at pains to level the playing field, and issued the likes of Orange Romania and Vodafone Romania additional short-term concessions in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands to ensure that all existing spectrum allocations expired on 5 April 2014. Despite the nominal switchover deadline, ANCOM has confirmed that the 1800MHz spectrum resources were actually adjusted at midnight on 31 March; the 900MHz frequencies will be redistributed later this week.
