DTAC launches commercial LTE in capital

2 Apr 2014

Thailand’s second largest cellco by subscribers DTAC has launched commercial 4G LTE mobile high speed data services on its 2100MHz network in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, via its 3G/4G licensee unit DTAC TriNet. One of DTAC’s network vendors Ericsson – sole supplier for Evolved Packet Core, User Data Management and circuit core solutions – announced that the move was aimed at meeting the needs of a data-hungry new generation of users in densely populated areas, following an LTE rollout which began in February 2014. A release adds that by deploying LTE on 2100MHz, DTAC gains improved network capacity and enhanced performance in Bangkok, and will also have ‘a cost-effective network ready for continued data traffic growth’. TeleGeography notes that Telenor subsidiary DTAC’s new service is the country’s second commercial LTE launch after True Corp’s combined 3G/4G 2100MHz debut in May 2013, while additional LTE-suitable spectrum in the 1800MHz band is up for grabs in an auction scheduled by the Thai authorities for August this year.
