KPN of the Netherlands is to begin its new home Wi-Fi hotspot service at the start of next month, with the first pilots of the scheme in Ijburg, Dutch-based Telecompaper reports. Offered in conjunction with international hotspot firm Fon, the service will turn each KPN user’s home Wi-Fi network into a public wireless LAN hotspot which can be used by the firm’s other customers. The same system has already been put in place by Dutch cable operators Ziggo and UPC. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, between April and September 2013 Ziggo activated more than one million Wi-Fi hotspots, utilising the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality on customers’ cable modems.
